Reason #33 This Vegan is Optimistic: USDA reports US meat consumption is going down, way down!

Happy New Year everyone! 2011 was a great year for the animals, and 2012 is going to be even better.  Mercy for Animals writes that the USDA is predicting a steep drop in US meat consumption in the new year (12% less than 2007).  And turns out meat consumption has been declining for the past four years.  The tide is definitely turning!

Read the full report here: Daily Livestock Report pdf.  The graph above comes from that report —  kinda gross to think that the average American consumes about their own body weight in meat every year!

Reason #9 Why This Vegan Is Optimistic: YouTube

A video was released last week showing horrific treatment of pigs at a farm in Iowa.

While I found the video quite upsetting, it also made me hopeful.  Mercy for Animals released the video on June 27. Less than one week later, it has been viewed nearly 100,000 times on YouTube alone. Wow!

Video and the internet are incredibly powerful tools.  Video conveys the terrible reality of the pigs’ treatment more effectively than photographs, and thanks to the internet and social networking sites, the story has been widely and rapidly disseminated.

Ripple effects were immediate.  Major news organizations reported the story, and national grocery chains announced that they would no longer purchase pork from this supplier.

While graphic videos like this are quite disturbing, it is very important that people not shy away from the truth.  If you don’t like what you see in the video, don’t support it through your purchase of pig products.
